The love
that exists between CÄrudatta and VasantasenÄ is clearly very strong as it endures throughout
all manner of trials and tribulations. As a Brahmin, a member of the elite social caste,
CÄrudatta should not be mixing with a courtesan like VasantasenÄ. Throw in the fact that he's
a married man and you have another reason why he shouldn't be involved in such a relationship.
However, the very fact that CÄrudatta is prepared to go against the prevailing social norms in
being with VasantasenÄ would seem to suggest that he's genuinely in love with her.
As for VasantasenÄ she's positively thrilled to have found a man who loves her for
herself, who's prepared to ignore her public image as a courtesan and see the woman beneath, a
woman who needs to be loved. VasantasenÄ responds to her lover's overtures by entrusting
CÄrudatta with a casket of jewelry, which unbeknownst to her, will cause them both a
considerable amount of trouble later on.
In a case of mistaken identity,
CÄrudatta is falsely accused of murdering VasantasenÄ and stealing her jewels. But just before
he's about to be executed, VasantasenÄ makes a dramatic appearance. It turns out that she was
alive all along. VasantasenÄ could've remained in hiding, but she chose to come forward and
save her lover's life. In doing so, she displayed once more just how much she loves
CÄrudatta.
